Another Milestone, Check

This morning I went in for my glucose test. I was terrified--I mean, to the point of being ready to call my doctor and say, "Is there a way that I could just test my sugar every day for a week and use that as the result or something?" I had already been well-informed about how sucky the test is from other people and I really wasn't trying to make things worse on myself, but I wanted to search online and see if anyone had any tips on how to make the test more bearable.

Well, that was stupid--although I DID learn that there was a study done substituting 18 Brach's jellybeans for the Glucola, and some doctors and labs will allow you to substitute those (some places will even let you eat pancakes with maple syrup, cinnamon rolls, or candy bars). I wish I had known earlier. Next time I will be asking about that.

I drank the mixture, which at my lab, was just a little water bottle about the size of the mini Zephyrhills bottles. It had been chilled and just tasted like flat orange soda. Not really pleasant, but not the thick syrup I had been led to expect by everyone's stories. I got it down and got to wait in a nice little private room (not the hot waiting area filled with old people, which I didn't think I could handle). Mr. ABC123 was there with me, but I really didn't want to talk--I just wanted him there for comfort. The hour passed quickly enough, and my stomach hurt a little and I felt a bit shaky, but nothing too awful. I got my blood drawn, which was fairly quick and painless, and then we headed home.

On the way home is when I started to feel bad. I broke out in a cold sweat and just knew I wasn't going to make it, even though it wasn't that far. Luckily I kept my double-bagged grocery bags from my Zofran days in the car, so I just grabbed those when I needed them and got sick. After all that sugary mess was out of my system, I felt 100% better. Now I'm just hoping that I passed the test--if I only lasted a little over an hour before throwing up this time, there's no way I would make it through the three-hour test with DOUBLE the sugar in my system.

  1. Hope you pass!! I will tell you it was better tasting last year than it was when I pregnant with my son in 1999. :)
