Summer Reading List

I got two books from the library today. I didn't go in looking for these particular books, I just wanted to see what they had in the way of pregnancy books so I could start thinking about some things...like birthing options. Even though I *think* I've made up my mind, I'd like to know what my choices are, and what I'm committing to if I decide to go with my gut instinct. I had also hoped to find some books on breastfeeding, but no dice--at least not at my library. It seems counterintuitive to me to look for those books at the dawn of my second trimester, but....makes more sense than trying to read about it after the baby's born, right? HA!

My spring break is coming up, so I wanted to go ahead and get rolling. I know I'll have two months of summer break before Little One arrives to read up on these things, but why save them til the last minute?

My selections today were Your Best Birth: Know All Your Options, Discover the Natural Choices, and Take Back the Birth Experience by Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, and The Smart Mother's Guide to a Better Pregnancy By Linda Burke-Galloway. I haven't gotten into them yet, but I'll get started this weekend.

What did you read? What have you heard about, and what do you recommend?

  1. sounds like you're on the right track! :) i've heard really good things about Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, but i haven't read it. i've also heard good things about The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. we took a breastfeeding class at our birth center and it was very helpful, but you can't really know how anything will go until you're in the moment (but for me, the lactation consultants in the hospital were TERRIBLE and i wish i'd prepared more. we almost didn't make it!)

i wish i had some helpful advice on natural birth... :( but definitely watch the Business of Being Born. it's amazing (but might scare the crap out of you).

  2. Ok, I'll look for them! Thanks. Yeah, although I have hopes, I've committed to very few plans because I figure plans are nearly pointless...but I at least want to learn what I might be facing. I always thought I would never be one of those women who could go for natural birth, but I at least want to know what sacrifices it would involve if I didn't go natural. Plus, any and all coping skills I can learn for the delivery room must be beneficial!
