Grilled Cheesus

Oh yes, I'm going there.

So, here's the thing. The hubs and I got into a conversation about this on the way home tonight. Last year, I enjoyed watching Glee. I really liked all the storylines they were following. I thought the Quinn/Finn/Puck storyline had some good material, and I really liked the Will/ Emma relationship. Terri was absolutely batty, and I liked having her on the show. The whole concept of her faking a pregnancy, and wondering when the heck her husband was going to wake up and notice? Bizzare. I liked it. Mix it all together with a dash of Puck's "Sweet Caroline," and I was happy.

Then, they came back from winter hiatus, and a lot of their storylines had been resolved. They started focusing on that kid from the rival glee club and Rachel's real birth mom, and it was all fine and good, but not as interesting as the first half of the season, in my opinion. My first moment of, "Hm, this seems a little too bogus" was Rachel and her mother doing a soulful duet of "Poker Face." I wasn't a fan, but I thought, "Eh, even LOST had an off week once in awhile." Then, there was the Madonna "Like a Virgin" montage, which made this married woman blush.

Both DH and I were saying that in the past several weeks, there hasn't been much story. Heck, the highlight of the show was seeing John Stamos do a guest spot. And as much as we all want Will and Emma together, I can't even hate him. He's Uncle Jesse, for crying out loud. That's going against the moral code of any child of the 90's.

So anyway, I was secretly losing faith, but determined to press on in hopes that things would pick back up.

Enter "Grilled Cheesus."

I found the episode offensive...I have to say. Not so much the part where Finn prays to a sandwich and treats God like a genie, because I think a lot of people do that. Heck, I'm sure there are people that think God enabled them to get to second base.

No, the parts I had a hard time with were the disparaging remarks against Christianity, including that it ignores science. I'm not going to get up on my soapbox and talk about how incorrect that is (at least not today), but there were so many blatant anti-Christian lines in the show with no redemption to balance it out. It was basically, "Happy Tuesday, kids. Today we're going to try and convince popular culture that Jesus is a crutch for the weak-minded, PLUS, BEATLES music! Enjoy!"

It bothered me. It did. It's just sad to see a wildly popular show like Glee take such a stand against God. And hey, we can make ourselves feel better all we want. We can rationalize it away and say, "It's just a show." But really? That's not what it's about, and we all know it.

I really liked the music, and I'm not "afraid" of pop culture. But I have to question where the line is between appropriate and just not worth it anymore in my life.

I may just be Gleeked out.
